Possible Leads:

in the Yucatan:

  • Chichen Xoxul - a secluded, secretive area of ruins which includes Black Stones and a Temple dedicated to sorcery and th stars.  Xoxul translates to outcast or pariah, and Chichen refers to a "mouth of the world" and often refers to a well or other drop.  (See Into the Yucatan by Dr Arthur Cartwright)   Map location indicates south of Cenote.

  • The Black Stone is linked to similar “crude scratches on a gigantic and strangely symmetrical rock in a lost valley of the Yucatan.  The Black Stone, Hungary, South and Central America, as well as Ziggurats (possibly inspired by The Black Stone) of Babylon/Akkadia and of the pre-zigguratical “zaqaru” of the Ubaidian period are all also referenced in Ziggurats of the Pre-Helladic Period.  He is making the bold claim that all of these disparate works of stone draw their ultimate inspiration from the preternatural dimensions of the “Black Stone” which the author ultimately claims “thrusts into the heart of every building constructed by man; thrusts into the very subconscious of our modern edifices of pride and hubris”.

Possible Leads:

in Mexico:

Luz Discos (P.O. Box 1629  Mexico D.F.)

(Mexico City)

2 Partners in charge: 1) “Jonathan Brooks (J.B.)” (writes to Trammell, probably originated as Echavarria’s contact, named as the local leader by Donovan), 2) de la Luz (who seems to be in charge of the recording).

J.B. and de la Luz recorded a single track, and were working on an entire record of the Mouth’s song.

The two partners (based in Mexico City) are tasked with Nectar distribution throughout North and South America.

It’s possible the operations in Mexico City went somewhat off-plan.  Their production was down, and there is discussion (April 1934) of avoiding the “old lies”.

VALETTA, MALTA

  • MALTA

    • Montgomery Donovan

    • “And the nectar flows like a river of tears.”

    • Feb 1934, Valetta, ledger of increasing Nectar production.

  • Montgomery Donovan own 3 properties in Valetta

    • Townhouse

    • Yacht (The Elegant) - we know he takes a boat out there some evenings, and occasionally spends the night

    • Warehouse

  • Mr Donovan and his wife (Portia) are amongst the Elite; they are premiere donors to the Opera House, and he is a member of the local gentlemen's club (which Howard has joined).  Not seen at the club in a year.  Rarely visits the Opera House anymore (only him, never his wife, leaves partway through.)  UPDATE: Portia likely deceased.  Probably killed by the cult as a show of power by the Head of Security (and possible true leader) Dianna Hurtz.  The Donovans also have a son, who spends most of his time at the local hospital with a young friend, "injured by a small mouth".

  • Mr Donovan described as a "big man", seen with an entourage of men.  Paranoid, seems to always think someone's out to kill him. Being seen less in public (last at the yacht - in the daytime at least - maybe two weeks ago).   UPDATE: It is likely that Donovan is no longer in charge, but more a front man.  He seems to have taken up heavy bouts of drinking, and is likely to have either seen his wife killed or been forced to do it himself.  This is still a working theory.

  • Don't eat the prawns.

  • The warehouse is quite well guarded.  Too well guarded, some might say.  Surveillance: car pulled up with several well-dressed men, including MD, disappear inside for several hours, come back out with a box.   UPDATE: all operations at the warehouse have been closed up and ceased since the group raided it and "destroyed" the Nectar source.

  • Yacht: bar drunk dry, glasses scattered, "magical" wards where paintings used to hang.

  • Selling the drug.  Shipped out by boats all over the world.  MD doesn't want it sold within Valetta.  Drugs come from inside the warehouse, but guard doesn't know if that's where it's made.  DIANNA HURST = head of security.  Watch the boat from the townhouse (saw H, O, E board the boat.)

  • There were children's books on board the yacht, so possibly MD has children. Wife seems to have disappeared from public scene.

  • SIR GODFREY - KNIGHT - have been watching MD and his drug cult.  Wants to work with us against MD but also against Diana, who he deems more dangerous.  UPDATE: Sir Godfrey, Grace, and Howard all perished during an epic battle against the cultists and one of these giant mouths in the warehouse.  We believe the mouth was destroyed.   The mouth was indeed producing the Nectar substance into great troughs, but we do not know what was feeding it.  There was no obvious source of sexual or violent energy in evidence on site, nor the playing of records.  Sir Godfrey was, however, in possession of an anti-Nectar substance in small quantities.  Unfortunately, he perished before we could learn more about its manufacture or origin, or indeed whether more yet exists.

  • Further update: We fled Malta with the help of Montgomery Donovan, in exchange for rescuing his son.  We also rescued a young boy afflicted by a mouth bite, and left both children in the care of Donovan with a secret method of contact, with whom we now share an uneasy alliance.

Possible Leads:

 In Savannah:

  • Edgar Job – is there more to Edgar?  Is he there intentionally to spy on Henslowe?
Ayers has told us Edgar was special – is he still?   UPDATE: Savitree noted Job was "special" to Echavarria.

  • Douglas Henslowe  - seems to have told us all he knows.  Erik believes he may be more forthcoming if we tell him the truth of Winston’s death.

  • Mrs Henslowe & John Currothers – are they ignorant of all this, or did he or she notify the thugs?  (We were attacked leaving their, rather private, property.)  Mrs Henslowe was unaware that Dr Keating was fraudulently billing/claiming to bill her estate for Edgar Job’s care.

  • Dr Teak – The Head Doctor at Joy Grove Sanitarium.  Very by the book, but also helpful and honest. Probably.

  • The Gang of Thugs and Daniel Loman:  The gang who attacked our car upon leaving the Henslowe Estate, a threat to drop the case.  Professor Wolf recognized the tattoos to be of a Thai origin.  We know the gang was staying at The Gastonian hotel and checked out Sept 5th (the same day as the attack), their bill was paid by one Daniel Loman (this was pre-arranged), they never spoke any English, and their bags were delivered to the Savannah airport the same afternoon.  Could the language be artificial?  Update: Ayers told us Echavarria knew someone in Thailand.  We also know the thugs have not been seen at The Gastonian since our first visit to Savannah.

Possible Leads:

In Los Angeles, CA:

  • Ramon Echavarria’s library @ UCLA
We have acquired 5 books from Echavarria’s collection.
Trammell had more (these have likely been packed up and taken into Walker’s care, before Trammell’s house was burned down.)

  • Echavarria had household staff (one of these identified his remains).

  • Walter Kriss – the investigating officer for the Incident in 1924, in LA

  • The Nectar – we have witnessed the cultivation of Nectar in the US, what of its cultivation methods in Thailand?  And beyond?

  • Jack Pizner, P.I.  The Thug who attacked Grace, and has threatened the remainder of the gang (and now offered to pay us off.)  Does he know anything more?
UPDATE: Pizner showed up in New York, when Erik and Richard went to meet the hired LA Private Detective who obtained Trammell’s journal.  The detective was killed, but Erik manage to escape – with the journal!

  • (Captain) “WALKER” The well-to-do businessman who hired Jack Pizner.  Possibly involved with a real-estate development deal at the farm/barn.  Walker was likely living in the coach house at the Trammell Mansion, but he has relocated to an unknown place – possibly/probably no longer in Los Angeles.
UPDATE:  We now know Walker oversaw the distribution and business end in LA.

  • Professor MacDunn – lied about knowing the name Echavarria; update: seems more to have forgotten than maliciously lied.  Probably.

  • Filmland Express.  Reporter Marvin Penny has promised to look into contact possibilities for Olivia Clarendon, and the author of the 1924 article.  (UPDATE: We have spoken to Olivia Clarendon, but he may still be a resource.)

  • Arnold Freeman – reporter at the LA Times.  May have triggered attack on Grace.

  • See Trammell’s Journal!

    • This includes a list of the LA distributors with their networks.

    • Vials bear the mark of the LA Roarch glassworks.

The journal mentions trouble with the Haitians distributing their own “Nectar” which they believe is actually amphetamines.

Possible Leads

 In the NY vicinity:

  • FC Kullman, Katherine Clark, Vincent Stack – notes/office/travel documentsF
UPDATE: We have hit a dead end on Vincent Stack (identified, but with no family other than an elderly mother, not likely to have left behind records which could be found a decade later)

  • Was there another woman?  Mrs W-R mentioned “maybe two women”

  • We could consult the Arkham Library for books on this topic and/or attempt to track down an expert in this particular subject area.  It might help to talk to someone who has some idea what we’re talking about, and could perhaps offer advice or further direction into our studies.  (I have requested contacts and materials from George and Chastity.)

  • Golden Goblin Press of NY published a new version of Unaussprechlichen Kulten in 1909 – it would be interesting to find the person(s) behind this newer edition.

Possible Leads:

 in Thailand:  (needs update)

According to Lee Dempson (the hobo):

You go to the “Fragrant Honey Shop” in Bangkok

Take 20 baht and 10 baht notes, and rub the corners

You say to the guy at the door “I’ve come to see the exhibition.”

According to Trammell’s journal:

Visit the Fragrant Honey Shop in Phra Nakron, Bangkok

Say to the doorman “I have come to join with the circle of excess.”

          This note is signed “S.S.”

This “S.S.” urges Samson Trammell to do more research, and warns him he may be wrong about the nature of what they’re dealing with.  He writes:
“When dealing with any entity of vast power, it is essential to be fully aware of the nature of that entity. To fail to do this, whether one wishes to worship or to destroy that entity, is to court disaster.”

Daniel Loman and his gang of Thai thugs (see leads in Savannah)

Echavarria conducted business with a Thai woman.

Possible Leads:

International:

  • Hungary: The Black Stone possibly a sinister monolith brooding among the mountains of Hungary. (see Unaussprechlichen Kulten for more details)  UPDATE: Trammel's Journal refers to The Black Man - related?
(source: annotations in our copy of Unaussuprechlichen Kulten; these annotations possibly reference a secondary source, possibly a travelogue – possibly another book from Echavarria’s collection if the handwriting is his?)

  • Friedrich Wilhelm von Junzt – author of the original Unaussprechlichen Kulten; could there be notes of his somewhere re: what he chose not to print?

  • Brill Davidsen – published Cults of the Aksumite Empire in 1897, may still be alive and/or have left behind further notes.  His book references Revelations of Glaaki (Acuna’s book) suggesting parallels.  His thesis mentions the “Prisoner of Glaaki” and the “Maw of the Mouth”.

from Savitree's Notes

  • Australia: Stirling Henry (of Oxford, now in Australia) - in 1934 he contacts Husain Soliman re: "Cyclopean Stone Blocksin the Great Sandy Desert of Australia.  Savitree came into possession of photographs and noted clear parallels to the odd stone carvings and "little red men" described in Victor Hill's Legendry and Customs of the Severn Valley.  Savitree believed these might be related to the same lore described in the Revelations of Glaaki, and therefore could lead to the identity of the Liar from Beyond.

    • Savitree wasn't the only one to take note.  Her notes indicate Miskatonic University is planning an expedition in close coordination with Mackenzie (the man who took the photographs) departing in Spring 1935, and that she was in contact with a Professor William Dyer of the Geology Dept.

  • Egypt:

    • Legends of the birth of a volcano, a "mouth of the earth" - a "mouth" gets into an argument with a goat herder (or farmer, or whatever) until it explodes.  Savitree believes this was a manifestation of the Many Mouths (Echavarria's Gol-Goroth).  However, there are no volcanic sites in Egypt, so the legend is unlikely to be Egyptian in origin.

    • In Trammel's journal, discussing the Black Man - "He was a vaulted past stretching to the sands of ancient Egypt."

  • Tunguska (Siberia): One version of the story in Arabic described a massive explosion which "ripped the Mouth apart and buried it at once, so that its voice might be stilled and would shift no more".  This caused her to look for other similar explosions which drew her to the Tunguska event of 1908Leonid Kulik, a Russian mineralogist, convinced the site was a meteoric impact, began an expedition in 1927, to which she sent an "ethnologist" Braunlich and a team, secretly, to search for a mouth sign - of which they found none.

    • She had hoped that such an explosion might have caused mouths to appear on fallen trees (as Braunlich had found in China the year before).

    • Local "Evenki hunters" believed the blast had been a visit from the god Ogdy and that the land was now cursed. The phrase Ogdy's "shout" initially interested him, but he soon dismissed it as local folklore.

    • Entering the Interior of the Blast Zone, however, led to curious results.  Braunlich and Kulik's teams became separated.

      • Kulik's team became secretive. They were observed entering a cave complex, possibly removing materials from therein; and would not allow Braunlich's team "because of seemingly paranoid territoriality".

      • People began disappearing, no bodies found.  It appeared the missing persons seemingly wandered off into the snow due to "hypothermical paradoxical undressing", but Braunlich was unconvinced.

      • Hal Becker, Braunlich's head of security, captured a strange Old Man prowling in the area.  Becker is convinced the Old Man is murdering the missing persons.  The Old Man claims to be a surviving member of a 1908 expedition to the area.

      • Braunlich met privately with the Old Man for just over a half-hour.  Then stumbled out of the tent muttering about a "Black Thing", collected several firearms and left the camp.  Braunlich's body was found the next morning, crushed between two fallen trees.  During the night, the Old Man escaped.  There was an unsuccessful manhunt, but some reported "strange luminosities emanating from the direction of Lake Cheko".

  • Tibet:  (the site of Kang Rinpoche, Mt Kailash) - THE ORIGIN STORY????

    • Savitree was in possession of a rare copy of The Key of Solomon, which included not just Books I and II, but an unknown Book III.  Book III dealt primarily with "lalarta pu" or Phantom Mouths. Although the lalarta pu do not seem to have exactly the same properties or behavior of the mouths manifested by Echavarria and his inheritors, Savitree discovered that the summoning rituals described shared several key points in common with the summoning ritual Echavarria performed in 1924.  Unfortunately, the rituals are frustratingly incomplete, requiring - like much of The Key of Solomon - an additional key or cypher to unlock.

      • The Key offers several warnings about the mouths being liars which cannot be trusted "unless one knows the identity of 'the master above them'" and uses it to bind him (using combinations of the demon-binding rituals found in Book I of The Key of Solomon.)   The mystery of the Master of the Mouths is, of course, left a mystery (most likely consigned to the same lock text as the ritual keys).

      • The book claims the lore concerning lalarta pu is derived from the "teachings of the panarka, from those who passed beyond Persia into the lands of bisit uzni."  It tells of the legendary peak of Kang Rinpoche, the Precious Jewel upon which hung a "Wreath of Mouths".  During that golden age, the "nectar of bliss" was said to flow down the sides of the mountain and the air was filled with truth through the songs of lalarta pu".  This Golden Age of Kang Rinpoche came to and end, however, when the Great One withdrew itself "into the Maw of the Mountain" and "opened its many mouths in the seven corners of the world".

      • By 1932, Savitree seemed convinced that Kang Rinpoche had, at the very least, been the prehistoric site of worship for the Liar from Beyond. (And it even seemed likely that it might be the true site of the Maw itself).  Furthermore, she believed that she had identified the location of Kang Rinpoche: Mount Kailash, the sacred peak of Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists; well-spring of the Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra, and Karnali Rivers.

      • In Summer 1932, under the leadership of Husain Soliman, the Emporium of Bangkok Antiquities mounted an expedition to Mount Kailash, but faced difficulties performing their survey, hampered by the reverance of the locals.

        • In August, Soliman attempted to take a secret sample from the peak, but his team was driven off by enraged pilgrims making their circumambulation around the mountain.

        • Soliman's team was able to climb a number of faces of the mountain, but found no mouth-signs, nor evidence of cavities or cave-works.

        • Alex Kramer became increasingly convinced there was something "odd" about the area around the "Abode of Lord Shiva" (a sort of rift on the far side of the mountain), but repeated climbs there found nothing.

        • Soliman himself stayed aground to study further.  With the assistance of Phajol Khadpo, a "mystical expert", he was able to locate several ancient, heavily worn Buddhist stupas in an isolated rift a few miles from the mountain.  These mound-like structures typically contain Buddhist relics, but when Soliman excavated he found sealed casks of lead.  Most proved to contain only dust, but inside one he found the remnant of a MOUTH carved in stone.  Unfortunately, it crumbled to dust soon after the cask was opened.

        • Savitree concluded Mt Kailash was a dead end.  Her identification of the mountain might be incorrect, and certainly something remained locked in the secrets of The Key of Solomon, yet to be deciphered.

It may behoove us to compare this text with the book referencing Nectar in China to see if the two locations have any relation.
