THE 1924 RITUAL

The Incident (1924):

What we “know”:

Walter Winston, Douglas Henslowe, Vincent Stack “the fixer”, Katherine Clark, and F.C. Kullman collectively formed a group to track down and stop a specific cult. 

This cult referred to themselves as Echavarria’s people, if anything.  Mostly they partied, sex and drugs (plenty of both), but Echavarria also promised them power. 

Ramon Echavarria planned to summon Golgarath, the Fisher from outside.  They also spoke of The Liar from Beyond and it is unclear to me whether these are two beings or one with two names.

Edgar Job was a member of the “cult”, but never cared much about the power – he mostly wanted the sex and drugs and parties.  He claims to have basically been high continually from 1923 (when George Avery introduced him to Echavarria) through August 1924 (“the incident”).

According to both Mr Henslowe and Mr Job, a creature was summoned that night, described by Mr Job as having long arms and no head but lots of mouths.  Mr Job says whatever they summoned it was not what they were promised, nor what Echavarria expected.

According to Mr Job, just before the Fisher turned up, Echavarria put a spell on several of them, including himself.  He was screaming and scared, but did manage to get away. 

Some died from gunshots or stab wounds, Mr Stack in particular took out several of the cultists, and Mr Henslowe as well.  Additionally, the creature “began tearing people apart”.

Mr Henslowe ran and survived.  Katherine Clark and FC Kullman were specifically mentioned as dead.  We know Mr Winston has now passed.  We are told Mr Stack killed Echavarria, and was in turn killed by Edgar Job.  Mr Job (who also got away) doesn’t know if anyone else survived. 

Based on the patient files from Joy Grove Sanitarium, the incident may have occurred on August 13th, 1924. (Update – date verified)

 

 

New Updates on what we know about The Incident:

• There were celebrities associated with the Cult.  Richard Spend who died the night of the Incident.  Olivia Clarendon, who had attended some of the Cult’s parties, but then (at least she claims) cut off ties to the group. 

• There was another central member to the Cult: Samson Trammell.  Mr Trammell was described by Acuna as a third member of a triumvirate along with Ayers and Echavarria.  He has been described as a deviant, but also a high-ranking, mysterious, and wealthy member of the local “society”. 

• There was disparity among the members of the triumvirate.  Ayers became upset with Echavarria over “lies” about his true intentions.  Their argument, however, did not seem to last long.  The story goes that the “lies” which were told resulted in Ayers being invited into some “inner circle” of The Liar From Beyond.

• Nectar.  The Cult procured or harvested a substance known on the street as Nectar, which they distributed for profit.  We also know they partook of a honey-like substance at their sex parties, and that this substance might be itself linked to the perverse sexual acts which the cult performed for ritualistic reasons.  We assume, for the time being, these two substances are the same, in a whole or diluted state.

• The Summoning.  According to at least one Cult member, what they intended to summon (or lied about intending to summon) is not what appeared that night.  The name The Fisher has been associated both with the intended summoning and the actual summoning.  We have only seen “the mouths” appear physically upon a person, at this time (on Tshombe and Ayers) – but the descriptions about what appeared that night would seem to indicate the mouth appeared as an entity unto itself. 

• Something was dug up from the site of the Incident.  We don’t know when, but it was apparent when we visited in 1934, so perhaps recently.  There is much new construction going on in the vicinity, so this could merely have been a survey of sorts of the land, but we suspect perhaps something was left behind. 

• We now have the name of the supervising policeman at the scene in 1924.  His name is Walter Kriss.

• George Ayers was not in attendance at The Incident as he was in Ethiopia. 

 

WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED ABOUT THE CULT and its MEMBERS

 

• Ayers’ research is primarily concerned with Gol-Goroth (the Fisher from Outside) and the Liar from Beyond.  There is a possible duality in nature, making these the same, or one an aspect of the other.  Gol-Goroth may even be a harbinger or herald of the Liar.

• In 1922 Ayers discovers “Echavarria’s grand betrayal”.  Echavarria’s rites may have had nothing to do with Gol-Goroth, but actually (secretly) “the Bloated One”.  (Although Ayers is reported to be very angry, it seems he’s forgotten his anger within a few weeks.)  Ayers – by “piercing the veil” of Echavarria’s lies believes he has proven himself “worthy of the Liar” and now part of the “inner circle of Its worship.”

• There, too, is mention of a Forgotten God as a Mask for the Liar From Beyond. 
  “Let the Forgotten God remain forgotten.”

• Bartolo Acuna – Professor and Archaeologist from Universidad Complutense in Madrid, with whom Ayers exchanged correspondence.  Acuna had re-translated an old work (Revelations of Glaaki) which he found to be full of errors; he discovered a site for worshipping a particular deity through orgiastic rituals. 

  • The site is located in Dallol, Ethiopia

  • Ramon Echavvaria had a book which confirmed this new discovery.

  • Ayers recognized broad similarities in the “worship” performed by Echavarria and that mentioned in the new translation.

  • Acuna (who basically despises Ayers) was joined by Ayers on a dig at Dallol. (see below – the dig at Dallol)

Known (named) members/associates: Ramon Echavarria, Richard Spend, Olivia Clarendon, Edgar Job, Samson Trammell, George Avery &/or Ayers.

WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED ABOUT THE CULT and its MEMBERS

A brown, amber liquid which resembles honey.The ledger refers to it as with codenames “slick” “moses” and “umbrella”.The product was sold in liquid ozs for $3/unit.Quite a bit of it was being moved, and it was also consumed at all the “parties of this Church”.Samson Trammell was among those who used the substance, and the police did investigate at the time.

 

• Ms Clarendon also referred to a honey-like substance which the party-goers consumed, which matches up.  The accountant rolled over on Echavarria and is now a family man, so he wants nothing to do with any of this. 
   

• The “Nectar” of LA amplifies sexuality/inhibitions.  The “Nectar” of Thailand amplifies violence/instincts. 
   

• “Nectar” is extracted not produced.  In LA, we saw it running in channels from a giant mouth, presumably feeding off the sexual energy of a seeming endless orgy – one featuring depraved sexual acts similar to those discussed in The Rift of the Maw and in shown in the photographs Douglas Henslowe possessed.  The participants seemed to both ingest the “Nectar” as well as to help produce it, through their actions.  We do not yet know how it works in Thailand. 
   

• We have been given a location and entrance instructions for obtaining “Nectar” in Thailand. 
   

WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED ABOUT THE CULT and its MEMBERS

 

• Echavarria’s mansion was sold and is now inhabited by an older woman, Mrs Archer; this is likely where the provocative photos were taken.

The Dig at Dallol – 1924-1926

In 1924, and (with funding from ) initiated an archaeological dig at in .They unearthed a temple (which Acuna claims was exactly where he expected it to be, based on his research on a book called The text discusses .They did not breach the outer walls of the temple until 1926.After they had breached the inner sanctum, a few days later a volcano erupted burying the entire site.The site is now known as a living Hell among locals, and few dare to go there.

Ayers and Acuna were in Mersa Fatma when the volcano erupted, working with the local CMC mining group to re-negotiate the “lazy” labor and faulty equipment.Acuna returned home, but Ayers insisted on returning to the site.He has not been seen since by anyone outside of Ethiopia.

We have since met a few individuals who claim they were once part of a much larger group of Guardians (in this case of , but it seems as if they may exist elsewhere).They seek to protect the world against the great evil that dwells within.They say that at Dallol was just a mouth – but a mouth must be connected deeper to a stomach.They seemed surprised to hear that (according to Henslowe and Job, at least) another mouth had been awakened in California.

The Guardians (I spoke to three: Jerome in Mersa Fatma, and siblings Matthai and Mahoho in the village of Kalluli) say they know George Ayers, that they met him after the volcano erupted.  They believe Ayers has become repentant, and others among their kind taught him rituals of cleansing to keep the evil (now within him, permanently) at bay. 

WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED ABOUT THE CULT and its MEMBERS

 

The Guardians believe Ayers is holed up in a cavern, continuously performing these rituals (or should be) even to this day, and that we should neither concern ourselves with him nor bother him.They warn us not to go to Dallol, they say it is a Living Hell, that there is nothing there to see.But they will not stop us from going, and have even provided us a guide to find George Ayers, since we insist on making certain he is indeed repentant and no long meddling in cult activities.

According to The Guardians, the mouths are a symbol of evil, the eye of protection.

Update: We have been to Dallol and met Ayers.

• The Mouths.  We have seen two of these mouths.  The one upon Ayers is described to us as dormant, although Ayers himself says it still speaks to him, a voice in his head.  He has shut himself away in a cavern, south of Dallol in the desert of Africa – here he performs Rites of Atonement to keep the mouth (and its inherent evil) asleep.  We are told he will never be truly rid of it. 

We, too, have seen one – active and hungry – upon the body of .Tshombe acts as some sort of spiritual leader for the depraved people of Dallol.They have been corrupted by some evil which was awakened by Ayers and his crew.Tshombe feeds the mouth upon her, and the people of Dallol ritually harm themselves (some more extremely than others).Whether this too feeds the creature, or is done purely as a form of worship, we know not.We know Ayers received his at (an ancient temple), and can only assume Tshombe must have been there as well (although there is far more to that tale than we may ever understand).

UPDATE: We are in possession of a third mouth – this one “dead” (or the closest to it that we’ve seen – see notes re: the gardener Mr Brooker)

 

Update: we have learned there was an Asian woman who frequented the parties.Perhaps she was Echavarria’s contact to Thailand.
