A Brief History of Marmalade Skies

1965- Present

1965:

Marvin Stank, along with then- fiancée Judy Nesmith, forms a rock band in New York City with guitarist Lee Melvick, singer Suzy Dickerson, and drummer Axel Maddox. They call the band Marmalade Skies, with Marvin as their manager. Marvin and Judy marry on December 8, 1965.

1966:

Marmalade Skies signs with Groovytunes Records, and, at the end of the year, release their first album, Driving Without Headlights, with songs written by Suzy Dickerson. The album receives lukewarm reviews, and struggles to reach #94 on the Charts.

1967:

Marmalade Skies releases its second album, Jungle Gym, with songs written entirely by Judy Stank. The single from the album, “Better Off Dead” becomes a radio hit, and the album soars to #7 on the Charts. Marmalade Skies embarks on a sold out, worldwide tour.

1968:

Marmalade Skies releases their third album, Notes from a Padded Cell, featuring songs written by Suzy Dickerson. The single from the album, “A Stick in the Eye,” receives limited radio play, and the album reaches #96 on the charts. Critics pan the album and long for the days of Jungle Gym.

1969:

Marmalade Skies records the as-yet unreleased Rough Ride Home, once again for Groovytunes and with songs written by Dickerson. The band is invited to play at Woodstock, but their tour bus breaks down in Wells River, New Hampshire and they never make it to the festival.
